In 2009 Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art launched Project Coffee Table, which investigates how knowledge is produced, accumulated and circulated. The project is part of the house’s aim to produce a different kind of knowledge production. In 2009 and 2010 we have arranged 11 coffee table conversations, 33 artist conversations and 3 seminars. |
| In addition we have housed guided tours, workshops and other special events. The Coffee Tables are closed events that are connected to each of the eight annual exhibitions in Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art. 3-12 participants are invited for each Coffee Table, based on their interdisciplinary qualifications and interests. For instance, artists, sociologists, economists, philosophers and psychologists have participated.
With Project Coffee Table Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art aim to investigate the knowledge production which evolve during our exhibitions and events, but in a new and experimental way. With this initiative, we want to dig even deeper into the interpretation of the exhibition themes and relate them to our time and the many aspects which arise in the encounter between different areas of profession.
The form is founded in the saloon tradition from the 19th century, where the coffee tables were a meeting point for the arise of The Modern. With this initiative we intend to reinvent the classical saloon and create an experimental setting, where a group of professional participants can exchange knowledge in an equal manner, independent from official forms, authority or the contrast between the participants and the wider audience.
The book is not for sale, but it is available to look in, in Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art's Room of Contemplation.
