SUMMER EXHIBITION 2011

/ July 2nd – August 7th 2011

Three well-established and prominent artists give their perspective on what’s happening in the art world right now. Three hand-picked Danish artists, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, Danh Vo and Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen, have been invited to give their perspective on current developments in contemporary art.

ww   Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, Danh Vo and Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen have each invited artists who they find particularly interesting and with whom they share a creative affinity. The participating artists are therefore
not united by a common curatorial concept. In contrast, the invited artists work very differently, in regards to
both aesthetics and method. The SUMMER EXHIBITION therefore manifests itself as a multifaceted and eclectic exhibition that, instead of trying to unite many artists under one conceptual banner, endeavours to show the diversity of contemporary art.

Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen, who is currently participating at the Venice Biennale in the Danish Pavilion, has
invited 6 artists whose work tackles ideas about gender, identity and politics. In her choice of artists Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen has turned her attention towards Norway where transgender issues and performance seem to be of interest. Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen has invited Nils Bech (NO), Ane Lan (NO), Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (US), Benjamin Alexander Huseby (NO) & Lars Laumann (NO) and Maiken Bent (DK).

Danh Vo has invited two young and emerging artists. Danh Vo himself works with personal stories and concepts such as mental susceptibility, always with a conceptual approach. Sensibility is the key for the two artists Danh Vo has invited to participate in the SUMMER EXHIBITION, and both artists work with comprehensive video installations but in two very different ways. Danh Vo has invited Rasmus Røhling (DK) and Nguyen Trinh Thi (VN).

Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen is one of Denmark’s prominent contemporary painters.  For this exhibition Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen has asked three female artists to contribute with works that utilise the space by spanning one or several walls. Last but not least Schmidt-Rasmussen also focuses on video. Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen has invited Camilla Rasborg (DK), Mette Vangsgaard (DK), Pernille With Madsen (DK) and Olof Olsson (DK/SE).

The Summer Exhibition is a new concept. Intended to be a yearly event, the idea is to put focus on current themes and developments in contemporary art. Every year an artist or a group of artists will be invited to curate the exhibition. With the SUMMER EXHIBITION, DEN FRIE Centre of Contemporary Art wishes to enable current art practitioners to outline shifts in contemporary art to a broad audience.
