- If Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art was not on the corner of Oslo Plads, it would be the obvious place for a used car dealership!
Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art opens its doors to a notable solo exhibition by Danish artist Jens Haaning. Jens Haaning has produced a new site-specific work for Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art and for the area surrounding the building. He will transform Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art into an operational used car dealership and has entered an exclusive partnership with ALD Carmarket.
In the five week exhibition period ALD Carmarket will take over Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art and use the rooms as showrooms to sell a large selection of good quality used cars. Competent staff will also be on hand to share their knowledge and expertise with visitors.
Jens Haaning has rethought the role and functions of the art centres in earlier works as well, and he has thereby helped redefine the use of various exhibition rooms. Throughout the 1990s, Jens Haaning converted the exhibition rooms into, amongst others, a flag production outfit, a grocer’s shop and a travel agent. In this exhibition he once again combines two very different worlds in one work, thereby pointing to the shift in meaning that occurs when something is moved from one context to another. In addition to functioning as a framework in which visitors can reflect upon the cultural and economic aspects of the phenomenon that is the used car dealership, the exhibition also represents a commentary on the local art centre’s situation in Copenhagen that currently has five art centres each with very different profiles and politics. What they all share, however, are locations at very expensive addresses in central Copenhagen, and their relatively modest budget to produce exhibitions with.
