SPECIAL COMMITTEE
The Special Committee at Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art consists of four nominated artists and the management. Their primary objective is to ensure that the philosophy of the organisation is reflected in its annual exhibition programme. This programme focuses on collective exhibitions and is committed to presenting the work of important art practitioners working today. Furthermore, the work of the Special Committee is to prioritise exhibitions that relate to, challenge or incorporate the specific architecture of the building. The committee plan for six months at a time creating as diverse and innovative a programme as possible. Exhibition applications are assessed twice a year. Successful applicants can expect to have their work exhibited approximately 18 months after the deadline before which they applied. All applicants will receive the result of their application three months after the respective deadline has passed.

Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art arranges eight exhibitions a year, four of which are open submission. Three of these exhibitions are specifically chosen by the committee in order to enhance its profile as an experimental platform for contemporary visual arts. Each year one exhibition is chosen to review interdisciplinary practice; where the artistic production challenges the demarcation between art and the subject with which it intersects. Every year Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art presents a Summer Exhibiton, curated by two or three established artists. And the Special Committee selects an additional artist - for example, an emerging artist or an individual who has already had significant importance in the history of contemporary art, for a solo exhibition. The committee has established a partnership with ‘Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling’ (Artists’ Autumn Exhibition) for a further three years in order to continue the near hundred year old tradition of hosting the exhibition, as well as to ensure that in the future, Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art will be involved with newly emerging artists at this exciting starting point in their careers.

The four nominated member of the Special Committee are appointed each for four-year terms: two members, chosen by the board of Den Frie, are among artists currently residing in Denmark, and two are nominated by Akademirådet.
